JOHN HENRY WHITE (John H.)
and his family in Colombia.
family portrait.
Quoted from the book "Musing" of Mercedes Lucia Velez White (First Edition, February 2007. Medellín.) Pages 91 to 95. GRAW scanned the Journals of the TERTULIA WHITE, June 7, 2007. More information about the book, see: Coven No. 5 de la TW.

The photograph was taken from the front, and displays behind a waterfall and a deep background of rich foliage. You feel the humidity in the entire picture, is green but the picture is in black and white, smell the forest, with the jumble of leaves and dirt and moisture, and people. Great-grandfather (*) with its huge eyes, a beautiful face, high cheekbones, blond-gray hair and a square beard. He is wearing a cloth dress, vest, jacket and pants cut good English. You see the watch fob chain and has one hand resting a finger in his waistcoat pocket. is the highest group. On the left are the women of the house, sitting, two standing. Papa Del
Rique (*) is who are more photos in all albums. It is no coincidence. His life is a matter of pride for all who have known relatives. I wanted a lot and strangers, his image is very beautiful, the hair is parted in the middle, are strong features: high cheekbones, chin set and starting to shout through his beard, big blue eyes, expressive, sad.
There's a picture of himself, only the face , there is another that is sitting next to a table, his arm resting on it and to the forefront a long-fingered hand in relaxed position , beautiful. This photograph does not know if it was taken at his home in Nore, or in the studio of the photographer.
Cerca al mar, en una casa victoriana, vivían Sir Thomas White, of Irish descent, and Mrs. Louise Blake , of their marriage there were eight children, three boys came to Colombia: John Henry (*), Julien and George. (SEE EXPLANATORY NOTE at the end) came hired by the Colombian government to carry out feasibility studies for navigation on the high Cauca. So went through Buenaventura. In Cowes the family lived well. All worked at the shipyard owned by Sir Thomas White, his father, who was honored by the crown with a knighthood for problems solved with the construction of ships for the Navy, for the merchant fleet and cargo boats and passenger. It was a time history in which England was the most renowned naval power. Sir Thomas was educated at Oxford and the University's history remembers the name placed in a hall of students. The shipyard still exists in Cowes , and it was there that the sons of Sir Thomas practiced engineering, they then used mainly in Urabá, El Valle and pedagogical training of their children. Frontino chronic say, and not just say that Dad's house in Nore Rique was the first school of Engineering was here. The three White, who came together, met this country when almost everything was green, full of swamps, everything was about to start doing. Two of them fell in love with the climate, the forest and two pretty women, educated, Uribes rionegreras, aunts General. A daughter of George, born in Cali, Uribe married another of the same and appeared all those branches of the tree are the White Uribe Uribe and the White, and Urrao Frontino and Valle del Cauca. The third brother, Julien, he went to Africa and later in the year twenty-two, was heard of his death.
Dad - Rique was an engineer of those who construct fragments of the city and countryside. At that time, the world is just beginning to differentiate the activity of architect engineer. Dad - Rique assumes the two roles and stick to it. His house in Nore, typical Victorian cottage, had a steep roof like falling snow. Harbored an attic for the library. The roof was made of wooden shingles. Thereafter we used the wooden tiles in several houses in the region. Rique construvó Dad also houses Mine Hill, cooked small brick in Nore, a dark red clay of excellent quality. These houses, with mansard also surrounded by shelves for books and maps, had tiled roofs. These English, transplanted to western Colombia in recent years of the nineteenth century were still living in the bush all possible comforts, by dint of ingenuity. The houses of the miners, as described above, and the overall architecture of the various buildings of the camp, with all the necessary space for the benefit of gold, both technically and spatially, were carried out under the direction of Rique dad.
In Medellín, Don Juan Henrique (*) participated in the construction of the city actively. There are still traces of the huge footprint that, in this city in the making, is embodied in accordance with their plans. The layout of the Guayaquil area, with dimensions pretentious big city, which gave space to the neoclassical architecture that was installed in these premises sufficient broad that it was worthy of a high quality of urban life. The Buenos Aires neighborhood, plotted with the same generosity from the streets of Guayaquil, and changed its course in accordance with the dimensions of level, to "The English door," said a qualitative obsession that has merited a Dad - Rique a place in history.
The foundation work, planning and urban design people Dabeiba (A) , which again shows all the knowledge at that time, the city possible with considerations to the climate and landscape, a warm and fertile land. Is the original plan Dabeiba a sign of resilience. The generosity of the proposal can be seen in the size of the square, in the spaces for trees and the organization of living space. The Way of the West, which was traced and physically built under his direction, he aspired to be rail. After the project was transformed from road to sea, and was built with small variations of the same path, that dream railroad that had been the western railway. His social and political authority of a scientific, technical, and human recognition, judging by the number of observations on their geographical environment immediately. Firstly if we judge by your library, and second, by the number of articles he wrote about the customs of the people, especially his observations about the Indians of the Uraba region, now widely referred to in the treaties of anthropology.
When he was prefect of Urabá, dealt with the creation of safeguards for the protection of indigenous people, and he had to convince the powerful and ignorant settlers then, they had soul. This Anglican naciona1izado foreign conviction, had to convince Christians that were important national indigenous predecessors. That was sent to his home, William, Gustavo, who saw him work strongly in this cause, and through them to Gabriela, Mamy, his granddaughter.
"Mom - Rita , rionegrera, nice, hardworking, educated and handsome followed " Dad - Rique " until his death in all its undertakings and adventures. They were so resigned ladies then, consists in letters, full of details of their daily lives, how it was difficult. In a letter to White Teresita's mother, Adelaide Ruiz (Lala) , Rita says: "Two months ago I do not see John Henry, went to Turbo, they are tracing the path of the West and who knows when again, here all others are fine ... ", etc. The letter was written in a letter neatly formed by black ink and fine line with a pen. The great-grandmother" Mom - Rita "high also seen in the photograph with a long dress gathered at the waist, for use in the beginning of the century and topped encotado very high in the neck with a fine lace guipure. The dress is white in the picture Rodriguez and seems, by the fall of the fabric, it was cotton. Bolero of the skirt covers a figure, if not fat, generous shapes and sensual, a very pretty face, intelligent eyes big, black eyes and very sweet at the same time. The hair in a bow in the back of the head, very dark.
Jorge, William Paul, Ernesto, Teresita, Gustavo, Mercedes (**). A few knew them, all I heard. Therese died very young. Closely met Gustavo, who came home from my parents in Chile and Argentina (5), during the lifetime of my grandparents, with his wife Maria Uribe Williamson, old, white, soft and beautiful with an elegance that I have not see only in movies. Always felt hat with a veil over her face, covering his eyes clear blue. Amiable and distinguished, talkative and friendly. In the photograph, taken on the hill, women appear to the left, side of the waterfall, where diagonal, completing the scene, one woman, Aunt Mercedes my namesake, is seated. ---
