The building of the old Hospital San Juan de Dios was a need mid eighteenth century to the late decline from Hospital San Sebastián (1746). Until 1760 was called the Sacred Convent Hospital of San Rafael Archangel, who also served as a military hospital for the staff to the English crown.

mid nineteenth century was known as Military Hospital or the Charity, which ran a medical school between 1850 and 1857, then air is breathed cultured city, the same as in 1851 witnessed the degree of the first physicians in the School of Medicine, San Juan de Dios Hospital. Later it was rebuilt by the Governor Ramon Goenaga in 1890.

The building is known today was started in 1916 by architect Antonio Stoute. This consisted of two adjacent neoclassical halls of the current chapel. Later in 1942, supplemented with courtyards in two pavilions, under the Art-Deco style architecture. This facade is the most modern and overlooking the sea.

Since 1988 the hospital was transferred and lost its original use at the opening of the Modern Hospital Julio Mendez Barreneche. The old facade located in the back of the building (the 2nd to street race 22) has since been abandoned.
